Western Texas Splits with Vernon College, Drops Final Two on the Road
Vernon, TX – Western Texas College baseball opened its home slate with a split against Vernon College on Thursday, winning 10-3 before falling 10-6. The Westerners then dropped both games of Friday's road doubleheader in Vernon, 12-2 and 20-6.
Game One: Westerners Power Past Vernon, 10-3
Western Texas secured a decisive 10-3 victory in Thursday's opener behind a strong offensive showing and a steady performance on the mound.
The Westerners opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Franco Marquez singled to bring in the game's first run. The offense continued to build momentum, highlighted by a three-run sixth inning fueled by home runs from Dylan Malone and Reed Osborne.
Tyler Spruiell earned the win, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) over seven innings while striking out five and walking two.
Western Texas tallied 14 hits in the contest. Marquez, batting eighth, drove in four runs and went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Osborne, Garrett Rester, Marcleo Torres, and Malone each recorded multiple hits in the win.
Game Two: Vernon Responds in 10-6 Decision
Despite a standout performance from Garrett Rester, Western Texas fell 10-6 in the second game on Thursday.
Rester went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the third inning, Jackson Harris provided additional power with a three-run home run in the second inning, and finished with three RBIs.
Vernon took an early lead in the second inning on a passed ball and regained control in the fifth with a three-run homer to center field. The Chaps held off Western Texas down the stretch to even the series.
Game Three: Vernon Pulls Away, 12-2
On Friday, the Westerners struggled to keep pace in a 12-2 loss.
Vernon opened the scoring in the second inning with a pair of singles to plate the first run. Western Texas answered with solo home runs from Marcleo Torres in the third inning and Anderson Berndt in the sixth. Still, the offense could not build on its momentum as Vernon extended its lead.
