Snyder, TX — The Western Texas College Westerners (5–17, 2–2) opened conference play at home this weekend, splitting a four-game series with Clarendon College.
Game 1
Western Texas got on the board early when Caven Fuentes singled down the left field line, tying the game at one in the bottom of the first.
The Westerners took the lead in the second inning. Luke Trager walked, Reed Osborne laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Garrett Rester singled down the left field line before Fuentes added another RBI single to center field.
Easton Stewart extended the lead with a solo home run to left field in the third inning.
Tanner Spruiell started on the mound for Western Texas, allowing three hits and four runs (two earned) over five innings while striking out nine and walking six. Brayden Veach, Haden Johnson, Brady Watassek, and Luke Rosas all appeared in relief.
Western Texas collected nine hits in the game. Stewart drove in three runs while going 2-for-3, and Fuentes led the team with three hits in a perfect 3-for-3 performance. The Westerners also stole five bases and turned one double play.
Game 2
Western Texas fell 9–7 in the second game despite out-hitting Clarendon 11–9.
Clarendon scored two runs in the first inning after a Western Texas error and a passed ball.
Stewart responded again with a solo home run in the second inning.
The Westerners took a 3–2 lead in the third when Fuentes and Stewart each delivered RBI singles.
Clarendon tied the game in the fifth on a solo home run before Western Texas answered in the bottom half of the inning. Jackson Harris hit a two-run home run to center field, and Trager followed with an RBI single to give the Westerners a 6–3 lead.
Clarendon rallied in the seventh inning with a double and a three-run homer to take the lead for good.
Cole Melton started for Western Texas, pitching four innings and allowing three hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out nine.
Western Texas finished with 11 hits. Harris and Stewart each drove in two runs. Brandt House and Fuentes both recorded multiple hits, while Fuentes and Stewart each stole multiple bases as the Westerners totaled five stolen bases.
Game 3
Western Texas struggled in Saturday's opener, falling 25–5.
Clarendon exploded for 11 runs in the first inning and added seven more in the second to take control of the game.
Osborne provided a highlight for the Westerners with a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Mitchell Britton started on the mound for Western Texas, allowing six runs over one-third of an inning. House led the offense, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Fuentes added two hits. House also stole two bases.
Game 4
Western Texas bounced back in the series finale with a 14–8 win to secure the split.
Clarendon jumped out to a 5–1 lead through the first two innings.
The Westerners rallied in the third inning when Dylan Malone singled home a run and House delivered a two-run inside-the-park home run to cut the deficit to 5–4.
Clarendon briefly added another run, but Western Texas regained the lead in the fourth after Osborne walked, Malone drove in a run on a groundout, and Fuentes singled to left.
The Bulldogs tied the game at seven in the fifth before Sebastian Llamozas blasted a three-run home run to center field to give Western Texas the lead for good.
Western Texas finished with 17 hits. Florent Riep led the team with three hits from the ninth spot in the lineup. Malone and Llamozas each drove in three runs, while Fuentes, Rester, Franco Marquez, Trager, and House all recorded multiple hits. Marquez stole two bases as the Westerners totaled five steals.
