Edmond, Okla. –An early lead wasn't enough for the Western Texas College men's basketball team Monday night, as the Westerners fell 81–51 to Northern Oklahoma College–Tonkawa in their season opener.
The Westerners started strong, jumping out to an early 8–4 lead before the Mavericks rallied to take control midway through the first half. NOC–Tonkawa extended their advantage late in the period and maintained their momentum throughout the second half.
Calven Charles led the Westerners with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting while adding four rebounds and two steals. Jalen Brown and Zayier Dean each chipped in six points, and Rayan Fadika and Khedit Gatluak both pulled down seven rebounds apiece.
As a team, Western Texas shot 30.5% from the field (18-of-59) and 13% from three-point range (3-of-23). The Westerners also went 10-of-27 (37%) from the free-throw line and matched NOC–Tonkawa on the boards with 40 rebounds.
Western Texas College will return to action today, November 4, as they face Murray State College at the Elite 8 Classic, hosted at the University of Central Oklahoma. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
