Brenham, TX – On Saturday night, goals from Philipp Federer and Johnny Cuellar in the second half tied the Western Texas College men's soccer team to a 2-2 draw against No. 19 Blinn College.
The Buccaneers wasted no time getting on the board, striking just 15 seconds into the match to take an early 1-0 lead. The Westerners' defense would hold the rest of the way in the first half, keeping the deficit at one going into the break.
Philipp Federer evened the score for the Westerners off an assist from Myles Taylor. Blinn responded in the 88th minute when Kayde Gielinck converted a pass from Alek Melo to retake the lead at 2-1. Refusing to go away, Western Texas struck again in the 89th minute as Johnny Cuellar netted the equalizer off a setup from Pablo Lobon, securing the 2-2 draw.
Blinn outshot the Westerners 20-16 and held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. The Westerners, however, recorded a season-high 20 shots while being held to a season-low one corner kick. The draw marks the first time Western Texas has tied back-to-back games since the 2014 season.
Western Texas (2-2-4) returns home on Monday, September 15, to face Wayland Baptist University at Weaver Field in Snyder, Texas. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. CDT.
