Westerners Post Multiple Top-10 Finishes at Masked Rider Open
Lubbock, TX — The Western Texas College track and field team made a short trip to Lubbock to compete in the Masked Rider Open, hosted by Texas Tech, on Thursday night.
The Westerners turned in a strong overall performance, recording 9 personal records, 2 season bests, and 1 new national qualifier on the day.
Gage Harris led the Westerners in the men's 1500m with a 6th-place finish and a personal-record time of 3:59.08. Hayden Scott followed in 7th with a PR of 4:00.48, while Dan Ortiz placed 10th with a time of 4:14.51.
In the women's sprints, Charlize Fraser placed 10th in the 400m with a time of 58.29 and added a season-best 24.69 in the 200m. On the men's side, Elvin Belepe finished 7th in the 400m with a personal-record time of 46.41, followed by DaShaun Lezama (46.86, PR) and Sean Paul Simmonds (47.54, PR), with Simmonds also earning a national qualifying mark.
Julius Dawkins recorded a personal best of 10.79 in the men's 100m, while Tristan Salmeron also posted a season-best mark in the event.
In the 800m, Brandon Hinds placed 8th with a time of 1:52.26, and Donovan Dixon added a personal record of 1:57.11.
Megan Mayse turned in a personal-best performance in the 400m hurdles, clocking 1:06.52.
John Alcanter delivered a standout performance in the men's 5000m, placing 4th with a time of 15:21.62 while setting a new school record and personal best.
Up Next: The Westerners will travel to Austin, TX, to compete in the Texas Relays from April 2–4.
