Cross Country: Westerners Compete at Texas Tech Open
Lubbock, TX — The Western Texas College cross country teams competed at the Texas Tech Open hosted by Texas Tech University on Friday morning as freshman Cierra Garcia led the Lady Westerners with a 27th-place finish in the women's 6K (24:01.1) . Freshman Jason Dodd paced the Westerners with a 26th-place finish in the men's 8K (26:39.8).
On the men's side, the Westerners finished 11th out of 15 teams in a field of 110 runners, scoring 237 points.
Isaiah Garcia (45th, 27:17.6) and freshman Rosbel Barrera (47th, 27:34.0) while freshman Kyle Trantham (58th, 28:00.1) and freshman Dan Ortiz (68th, 28:26.3) rounded out the scoring five. Freshman Christiano San Martin (28:44.9) and sophomore Rosendo Fernandez (29:15.1).
In the women's race, the Lady Westerners placed 12th out of 14 teams in a field of 103 runners, tallying 319 points.
Behind Garcia's top-30 performance, freshman Yuriana Hernandez (74th, 27:14.3) and freshman Zoe Zepeda (83rd, 27:55.8) with sophomores Madison Stern-Regalado (90th, 29:05.1) and Genesis Serratos (92nd, 29:16.2).
The meet featured some of the strongest competition in the region, including a mix of NCAA D-II and JUCO schools.
After the meet the coaching staff stated"feels good with how the team competed today, considering holding some athletes out".
Westerners and Lady Westerners return to action on Friday, September 26, at the New Mexico Junior College Invitational in Hobbs, N.M.
