Westerners Open Indoor Season at Texas Tech Corky Classic
Lubbock, TX — The Western Texas College track and field team opened the season this past weekend at the Corky Classic, hosted by Texas Tech inside the Sports Performance Center.
Top Performances
Shevon DePass finished fourth in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.82 and is currently ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA. Alliah Baker placed sixth in the women's 200 meters, posting a time of 23.90 and holding a No. 2 NJCAA ranking. Jayden Palacios earned a 10th-place finish in the men's 600 yards with a time of 1:10.54 and is ranked No. 5 in the NJCAA.
Highlights
The Westerners returned from Lubbock with eight national qualifiers, 31 personal records, and nine season-best marks.
National Qualifiers
In the 60-meter hurdles, Shevon DePass qualified with a time of 7.82, while Shamer Black recorded 8.05. The 60 meters saw national-qualifying performances from Shagay Sheppy at 7.63 and Alliah Baker at 7.68. Baker also qualified in the 200 meters with a time of 23.97. Jayden Palacios earned his national mark in the 600 yards with a time of 1:10.54. Brandon Hinds qualified in the 800 meters after running 1:51.94, and Gage Harris secured a national mark in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:29.59.
Other Performances
In the 60 meters, Keo Davis ran 6.90 and Jakob Gargar posted 7.00. Shagay Sheppy finished the 200 meters in 24.94, while Charlize Fraser recorded 25.23. Kevin Bliss ran 48.73 in the 400 meters. In the 800 meters, Gage Harris finished in 1:56.80, Dan Ortiz in 1:56.81, and Donovan Dixon in 1:58.33. Harris also competed in the 1,000 meters, finishing in 2:29.59, while Ortiz ran 2:35.10. In the mile, John Alcantar clocked 4:26.76 and Christiano San Martin finished in 4:31.60. Alcantar also competed in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 8:50.81.
The Westerners will return to Lubbock on Friday, January 23, to compete in the Texas Tech Stan Scott Invitational.
