Illness, Short Bench Hamper Westerners in 72–47 Loss to Howard
Snyder, TX — Battling illness, cold symptoms, and limited depth on the bench, the Westerners (10-8,2-2) fell to the Howard Hawks 17-1,4-0), 72–47, on Monday night.
How We Got There:
Western Texas College struggled offensively in the opening quarter, shooting just 17 percent from the field and scoring 15 points, with five coming from the free-throw line. Rayan Fadika and Anesu Dehwe paced the Westerners early, scoring five points apiece in the first quarter.
Despite the shooting struggles, the Westerners competed defensively, holding a slight edge on the boards (15–14 rebounds) and forcing three steals, while Howard recorded none in the opening period.
Howard remained in control after halftime, outscoring the Westerners 33–32 in the second half. Khedit Gatluak contributed eight points, while Dehwe continued his consistent offensive production. Western Texas College showed improvement after the break, shooting 40 percent from the floor in the second half.
Both teams finished with 15 rebounds, but Howard's steady execution on both ends proved to be the difference in the 72–47 final.
