Snyder, TX – The Western Texas College Lady Westerners softball team (28-22, 11-9) continued their strong season with a Saturday sweep over the Howard College Hawks, winning 9-5 and 16-10. With the two victories, the Lady Westerners surpassed last season's win total of 26. The day also marked Sophomore Day, honoring 10 players for their contributions to the program.
Game One
Janie Rodriguez led the way with a three-hit performance, her second of the season. The Lady Westerners got on the board first, scoring on a double play in the opening inning.
A four-run second inning gave Western Texas a comfortable 5-0 lead, highlighted by an RBI single from Rodriguez and a two-run double by Olivia Marks.
The offense added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, using timely hitting and a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 9-2. Howard College attempted a late rally with three runs, but the Lady Westerners held on for the 9-5 win.
Game Two
Laney Vasquez had a standout performance, driving in five runs—a season high—while going 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Hawks jumped out early with five runs in the top of the first inning, but Western Texas responded with three runs in the bottom half to stay within striking distance. Howard added another run in the third to make it 6-3.
The momentum shifted in the bottom of the third inning when the Lady Westerners exploded for eight runs, taking control of the game. Western Texas finished with 20 hits as a team in the 16-10 victory.
